What It Means
A watchlist is a saved list of stocks or contracts a trader tracks closely without necessarily holding a position in them — used to monitor for a specific price level, pattern, or setup before actually entering a trade.
How It Works
Most trading platforms let you build multiple watchlists organized by theme — a sector, a strategy, stocks near a breakout level — so you can glance at relevant price action without wading through your entire portfolio or the whole market. A disciplined trader typically decides in advance what they're waiting for on each watchlist stock (a breakout above a level, a pullback to support, a specific news trigger) rather than just watching prices move and reacting emotionally in the moment.
