What It Means

Jobbing is trading slang for buying and selling the same stock repeatedly within a session to profit from small, frequent price moves — a few paise or rupees at a time — rather than making one big directional call.

How It Works

A jobber holds a position for minutes, sometimes seconds, closing it the moment a small target is hit and moving on to the next opportunity. It depends heavily on liquidity: jobbing works on a heavily traded large-cap or index future where the bid-ask spread is tight, but the same approach on an illiquid stock can lose money to spread and slippage before any real profit shows up. Brokerage and transaction costs also matter more here than in other styles, since a jobber's edge per trade is small and gets eaten quickly by fees if the trade count is high.
