What It Means
Junior Nifty — officially the Nifty Next 50 — is an index tracking the 50 largest NSE-listed companies ranked just after the Nifty 50. It's often watched as a pipeline of companies likely to graduate into the Nifty 50 itself as they grow.
How It Works
NSE reconstitutes both indices periodically based on market capitalization and trading volume rankings; a company that outgrows its Nifty Next 50 peers and clears the entry criteria typically gets promoted into the Nifty 50 at the next rebalancing, while an underperforming Nifty 50 constituent can get relegated down. Because of this, Nifty Next 50 tends to be more volatile than Nifty 50 — it holds companies that are, on average, earlier in their growth curve and haven't yet earned the size and stability of a top-50 name.
